Clonmacnoise Monastic Site
Walk in the footsteps of ancient Monks
No matter what your children have read in school history books, nothing equals the real-life experience of visiting the world-famous monastic site at Clonmacnoise. As you explore the ruined churches, the cathedral and the round towers, you can almost picture the monks as they went about their daily lives 1,500 years ago. While in later medieval times, you can imagine how life might have been for the sons of wealthy European families, sent here to be educated by the Irish monks. Alongside the ruined churches and round towers are three ancient high crosses. The original sandstone crosses are now in the Visitor Centre to save them from the elements, with exact replicas on the outdoor site. No visit to Offaly would be complete without a visit to this most special of destinations – even Pope John Paul II stopped by when he visited Ireland back in 1979.
