Cruising from Banagher 2

Cruising from Banagher

Slow down to the river's pace

Here’s your chance to hire your very own cruiser and take the family on a voyage of discovery along one of the finest natural inland waterways in Europe, the River Shannon. Start your journey from Banagher, sailing north towards Shannonbridge with it's long, multi-arched bridge and an old fort transformed into a modern restaurant. Next stop is one of the most popular attractions in Ireland, let alone on the Shannon - and it is much better to approach by water than by road - Clonmacnoise. As you explore the ruined churches, the cathedral and the round towers, you can almost picture the monks as they went about their daily lives 1,500 years ago. There is also an excellent visitor centre and Tea Rooms. You still should have time to call in to Athlone, the largest town on the river and visit Athlone Castle which was refurbished in 2013 and is open to the public. From youngsters to teens; they’re sure to enjoy the novelty of boat-living and seeing the world from a completely different water-side perspective!
