Hear what visitors had to say after their time in Offaly

'The Histoic town of Birr'

I am writing to bring to your attention a hidden gem within the town of Birr, that my family and I had the joy and privilege of experiencing, and which I feel it is now my duty to share with you for the benefit of all future tourists to the wonderful county of Offaly.

During our last trip to Ireland, we were lucky enough to be taken on a tour of the historic town of Birr by local legend Eddy Nolan. Despite not being an official or formal tour guide, Eddy opened our eyes not just to Birr Castle but also such exciting sights as the bog, the cattle market and HJ Haverty's pub. For you, these sights may seem run-of-the-mill, but for city folk like us these are fascinating insights into modern day rural Irish life that we would have completely missed without Eddy's expert guidance. Not only did Eddy have in-depth local knowledge of the history and geography of the places we visited, but he also made them feel highly personal, with stories relating from his own life and experiences - such as the process for making peat and who lives in each house now. Furthermore, he seemed to know absolutely everyone - not only in the pubs but also the shop, the park, the street and anywhere else we happened to pass, making us feel like a real part of the Birr community.

In today's era of Airbnb, Couchsurfing and Tripadviser, tourists don't just want to see the sights and move on, they want to experience places like a local. Eddy's knowledge, experience and inimitable style made our trip come alive and allowed us to really get a true feel of life in an Offaly town. My family and I have travelled all over the world, seen the Taj Mahal and the Great Wall of China, and yet the town of Birr will always stay with us as a highlight of all our trips thanks to young Eddy Nolan.
