Clara Bog Nature Reserve and Visitor Centre
An ancient bog with a present-day message
Begin your exploration of one of Ireland's best known raised bog by dropping into the Visitor Centre in Clara town. With its colourful wildlife displays, documentaries, cartoons and touch-screen info-graphics, you’ll get a deeper appreciation of this landscape which has been evolving since the last Ice Age 10,000 years ago, its unique biodiversity and its present-day conservation ethos. And as you stroll along the 1km boardwalk across the bog, you may be lucky enough to see some of the many birds who’ve made their home here, including the curlew, meadow pipit, skylark and merlin. If you’re quick, you might glimpse a lizard, while in the summer keep an eye out for dragonflies, grasshoppers and butterflies!
