Narrated by Jessie Buckley
The extraordinary story of the first transatlantic communications cable
August 16th, 1858: a short message is telegraphed from Valentia in Co. Kerry to Newfoundland, 3000km away across the Atlantic Ocean: ‘Europe and America are united by telegraph. Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace, good will towards men.’
The message, transmitted by Morse code, is conducted along the new underwater transatlantic telegraph cable laid across the bed of the Atlantic Ocean. Sending the same message by ship would have taken at least ten days, the transmission takes just hours and heralds the dawn of the modern communications age.
The Cable that Changed the World, a major 4K cinematic documentary film, with innovative graphics, historical reconstructions, rarely seen archive and stunning cinematography, will reveal the epic story of the first transatlantic cable and how it came to be laid between Ireland and Canada…
…The movie will be preceded by an introduction by John Burgess :”Circuits in the Sea – setting the political and technological context for the first transatlantic telegraph cable which Cyrus Field and Lord Kelvin were working within”
A Q& A will follow the Movie
