What it’s all about

About

A historic town in central County Offaly, Clara is well known for the nearby internationally important Clara Bog Nature Reserve, one of the finest remaining raised bogs in Europe. Situated along the River Brosna, Clara combines natural heritage with a rich monastic and architectural history. Visitors can explore Clara Bog’s boardwalks and interpretive trails, admire the historic convent buildings and churches and enjoy nearby walks and woodland scenery. Just outside the town in Kilbride, the remnants of a 12th-century monastery testify to the existence of a religious presence. According to tradition this monastery was founded by St Brigid of Kildare and is linked by an ancient road to Durrow Abbey founded by St Colmcille.
