Durrow High Cross
What it’s all about
About
Durrow High Cross is one of Ireland’s most important early medieval monuments, located at the historic monastic site founded by St Columcille in Durrow. Dating from the 9th century, the richly carved sandstone cross features biblical scenes including the Sacrifice of Isaac, the Crucifixion and the Last Judgement. Originally standing outdoors within the monastic enclosure, the cross is now preserved inside the church for protection. The site is closely associated with the famous Book of Durrow, one of Ireland’s earliest illuminated manuscripts, highlighting Durrow’s importance as a centre of early Christian learning and craftsmanship. Durrow Church and High Cross are state-owned National Monuments in the care of the Office of Public Works
