Ferbane

What it’s all about

About

Ferbane is a welcoming Midlands town surrounded by raised bog landscapes, riverside scenery and rich scientific heritage. Located close to the River Brosna and the Grand Canal, the town is closely connected with the internationally important raised bog habitats of the region, including nearby Ballylin Bog and the wider Living Bog restoration project. Visitors can enjoy the Ballylin Bog Boardwalk, which allows locals and tourists to explore beautiful bog woodland and open peatland landscapes. Ferbane is also home to the Mary Ward Heritage Centre, celebrating the life and achievements of scientist, artist, microscopist and naturalist Mary Ward, who was born nearby at Ballylin in 1827 and developed her lifelong fascination with insects and microscopy on Ferbane Bog itself.
