Meelick Weir & Victoria Lock

What it’s all about

About

About
Meelick Weir is a picturesque and historically important landmark on the River Shannon, located near the village of Meelick at the meeting point of counties Offaly, Galway and Tipperary. The infrastructure links the historic village of Meelick in east Galway to Lusmagh in west Offaly and forms part of the Hymany Way and the Beara-Breifne Way walking trails. The weir was built in the 1840s as part of the Shannon Navigation. More than 300 metres in length, it has a 12-sluice barrage and maintains and regulates the navigation level for the section of the waterway between Athlone (Lough Ree) and Meelick (Lough Derg). Walk the Weir and you will be crossing the Shannon into county Offaly. On the Offaly side lies Victoria Lock, which is large in scale and of architectural and technical interest as is the adjacent pretty lock house.

Discover
Surrounded by the River Shannon, wetland and rolling countryside, Meelick Weir is a wonderful place to soak up the natural beauty of this part of County Offaly. The area is popular with anglers, particularly for coarse fishing and with visitors who enjoy riverside walks and birdwatching. Swans, herons and waterfowl are commonly seen here, adding to its charm. It’s a great place to stop if navigating the Shannon by boat.
