Whitewashed Stone Chapel With Graveyard And Stone Wall

Rahan Monastic Site

What it’s all about

About

Rahan Monastic Site is one of County Offaly’s earliest Christian foundations, established by St Carthage (Mochoemóg) in the 6th century. Located in Rahan, near Tullamore, the monastery became an important centre of learning and religious life in early medieval Ireland. Although St Carthage later founded a monastery at Lismore, Rahan remained closely associated with his legacy. Today visitors can explore the historic church and graveyard that mark the site of the original monastic settlement.
