The Countess’ Collection

For Heritage Week 2026, step inside the historic reception rooms of Birr Castle for a rare behind-the-scenes encounter with garments from the castle’s textile archive, displayed in the very space they may once have been worn.

Led by the archivists caring for these precious pieces, this intimate Heritage Week event explores the elegant early wardrobe of Anne, Countess of Rosse (1902–1992), a strikingly fashionable figure whose arrival in rural Ireland during the 1930s created a fascinating dynamic between cosmopolitan culture and the rural Irish landscape.

At the centre of the display are several remarkable gowns by the celebrated Anglo-American designer Charles James, including pieces only recently discovered within the archive. Their conservation has been generously supported by the Irish Heritage Council, allowing the garments to be displayed together for the first time. Through letters, photographs and Anne’s own writing, the talk traces Anne’s relationship with Charles James and her wider artistic circle, which included her brother, the renowned stage designer Oliver Messel, and photographer Cecil Beaton.

From trousseau gowns and society fashion to surrealist-inspired daywear, this is a unique opportunity to experience fashion history brought to life through dress, storytelling and the romantic interiors of Birr Castle.

Tours will run daily at 3.00pm from 20–23 August as part of Heritage Week 2026, offering visitors a rare opportunity to view this beautiful collection and discover the stories behind its conservation, provenance and place within the history of Birr Castle.

Essential pre-booking is required, as places are strictly limited. The event is suitable for ages 12 years and over.

Please note that Birr Castle is a protected historic building and is not wheelchair accessible.
