RHSI Day Tour to Gardens of Down
- Other
Join the RHSI for a wonderful summer day exploring three exceptional gardens in the heart of County Down. From a hidden private garden to one of Northern Ireland’s finest historic estates, finishing with one of Ireland’s most admired contemporary gardens, this promises to be a memorable day for every garden lover.
Old Barrack House, Hillsborough
Our day begins with a visit to the enchanting Old Barrack House, a true hidden gem tucked discreetly behind the beautiful Grade I listed house. This intimate garden unfolds through a series of charming pebbled terraces and beautifully planted spaces, where every corner reflects owner Dawn Mitchell’s creative eye.
Planting has been carefully considered for colour, texture and form, creating a collection of garden rooms that feel both peaceful and inspiring. Tea and coffee on arrival provide the perfect start to the day.
Hillsborough Castle Walled Garden
From there we travel to the magnificent Hillsborough Castle, the official royal residence in Northern Ireland, where we will enjoy a special introduction by Head Gardener Claire Woods before exploring the celebrated Walled Garden, designed by renowned landscape designer Catherine Fitzgerald.
Lunch will be available at Hillsborough Castle (at your own expense).
The McKelvey Garden
Our final destination is The McKelvey Garden at Bessbrook, affectionately described as “the biggest little garden you’ll ever visit.” Although just a quarter of an acre in size, owners Hilary and William McKelvey have created a garden that continually surprises and delights.
Every inch has been thoughtfully designed, demonstrating what can be achieved through imagination, clever planting and an exceptional eye for detail. Packed with inspiration for gardeners of every level, it is a true plantsman’s garden that proves great design is never measured by size. Our visit concludes with a relaxing afternoon tea before we begin our journey home.
