Esker Sessions continues this autumn with the poets Jan Brierton and David Mallaghan..

Jan Brierton is a Dublin-based fashion stylist, creative director and poet. Her debut collection What Day Is It? Who Gives a Fck* was born out of the Covid lockdown and propelled by a viral poem that resonated across Ireland.

Her follow-up, Everybody Is a Poem: Midlife in Rhymes (New Island), explores menopause, motherhood, friendship and self-acceptance with her signature mix of sharp wit and emotional clarity.

Jan has performed her work live at Electric Picnic, the London Irish Centre, and the 3Olympia Theatre, where she opened for her poetry hero John Cooper Clarke.

David started writing poetry in Ballinamere National School aged 12. He was first published in the Fountain annual aged 15. Using comedy and satire, much of his work is observational and he has been performing for 15 years, throughout Ireland and abroad.

He has also performed stand-up comedy at various events around the country and much of my poetry is humorous. His key influences are William Blake and Spike Milligan and he has been involved in running gigs in Tullamore and Dublin under the name Scene of the Rhyme.

His first collection Turanjalilia Palestine (2019) was a book of pro-Palestinian poetry. He is currently working on second book.
