The Passion of Bathsheba Script Reading
- Concerts / Performances
Thursday 8th October, 5pm
Fomóire Productions presents an open workshop and read-through of Patrick Fogarty’s new play The Passion of Bathsheba, from the Honeymount series of plays by Patrick.
The story revolves around ‘Reenie Burke,’ a sixty-year-old woman in Honeymount; the play moves between the present and Reenie’s memories of her father, Big Dan Burke.
Reenie took sole ownership of the house and farm when her father died and has become reclusive as the years progressed, distancing herself from her sister Lily, who is now trying to bridge the gap between them.
Reenie, along with her neighbour, Dante, a hunchback, struggles to keep the place in order, yet refuses any outside help. Before her father died, Reenie was left to help care for her father, and when no help came then, she resents so-called help now. Reenie’s isolation and bitterness are now exacerbated by the news that a new motorway is going through the parish and is planned to go through her home. Reenie contends against the plans and fights against the locality over their proposals.
As the finances of her home and farm escalate out of control, and the local T.D places further pressure on Reenie, she begins to spiral into chaos and despair. Yet, she tries desperately to hold onto her house, her home, and her sense of what is right in this world.
