Not to mention, there are a variety of activities and attractions for all the family that are either good value for money, or free-of-charge! From the River Shannon to exploring the Slieve Bloom Mountains and plenty of castles and historic sites in between, Offaly packs a punch for a small county in the middle of Ireland! So if you’re considering a visit to Offaly this summer (you definitely should!), here are some great value day trip ideas:

Walk this way

The best kind of free activity is walking! Not only is it a chance to explore beautiful natural surroundings, but it’s one of the best ways to get out into the fresh air and get some exercise!

Being home to wild expanses of bogland, mystical rivers, and enchanting wooded valleys, as well as the majestic Slieve Bloom Mountains, Offaly offers a variety of walking and hiking trails. And there is an adventure suitable for every fitness ability and age, from leisurely strolls to more challenging routes.

For example, at the foot of the Slieve Blooms, the Kinnitty Castle Loop meanders on forest tracks on the grounds of the Kinnitty Castle Hotel and goes along the Camcor River. It’s approximately 4.5km and is suitable for all levels of fitness, as it’s a relaxed, tranquil walk. For a slightly more challenging hike within the Slieve Bloom Mountains, try the Glinsk Castle Loop, which is 6.7km and suitable for a medium level of fitness. Also close to the grounds of Kinnitty Castle Hotel, this follows forestry tracks, with some uphill stretches, and passes the ruins of Glinsk Castle. Then, grab a refreshment at Kinnitty Castle Hotel’s Monks Café afterwards!

Or head to Lough Boora Discovery Park, just outside Kilcormac. Lough Boora has a range of walking trails which are rated as easy, so are suitable for the whole family. The walks take you past unique flora and fauna, and wetlands and wooded landscapes, as well as past some innovative sculptures inspired by the rich, natural and industrial legacy of the bog lands.

Enjoy a picnic within castle grounds

Birr Castle Demesne is home to 120 acres of award-winning gardens and parklands which boast a rare collection of over 4,000 trees and plants. As well as exploring these beautiful gardens, stop off at the Castle’s main highlight – the six-foot Great Telescope which was built by William Parsons, Third Earl of Rosse, during the 19th century. There’s also a Science Centre on the grounds, which reveals fascinating facts about this telescope, along with the Parsons family and their many other feats of science and engineering.

But one of the best ways to top off a great day exploring Birr Castle Demesne and its gardens, is by having a picnic within the grounds. Whether you save money by packing your own picnic basket or buying some treats at the on-site café, there are plenty of picnic spots where you can take in the serene landscape.
As part of the 55th Birr Vintage Week celebrations, Birr Castle Demesne is also hosting a Big Beautiful Vintage Picnic on Friday 4th August, where guests are invited to be imaginative and create their own vintage-style picnic. Down by the river

There are a host of cost-efficient activities on the River Shannon, from renting a cruise boat in the town of Banagher on the Shannon or in Shannonbridge, to fishing, kayaking and swimming. You could even just sit on the river banks, simply taking in the views and its peaceful sounds, or pack a picnic to enjoy by the river.

Or take a cruise to Clonmacnoise, which is famous for being one of the first significant Christian sites in Ireland, and see how the Shannon meanders past the amazing monastic ruins there. One of the best places to start your River Shannon and Clonmacnoise adventure is Banagher, which sits just south of the religious ruins.

For a thrill!

Offaly doesn’t just offer a serene escape, for those who are looking for exhilaration, there are also a variety of thrilling activities. The Slieve Bloom Mountains are also well-known for being a mountain biking paradise. Many people from near and far visit the mountains to explore its biking trails which traverse around the mountains and through its forests.

There’s a blue trail which is graded moderate, with some difficult sections. While the red route is suitable if you’re up for a big challenge, with plenty of tricky climbs and descents. You can bring your own bike, but there’s a bike rental facility in Kinnitty, the Slieve Bloom Mountain Bike Centre. You can also book a guided mountain bike tour, if you want to get to know the mountains (or if you’re a beginner).

If you jump at the mention of height-related activities (literally!), then consider seeing all of Offaly in its glory from the sky!
